Why Linux is a heap of smouldering Doodoo...
Okay, that may seem a touch harsh - I like Linux, when it works, I love open source software and I genuinely thing it's the way operating systems should go. However, there is a reason why people don't use it and that is because the nerds who make this and who comment on support forums don't speak english, they speak linux and no one else blooming understands it. I installed Ubuntu - apparently the easiest and most user friendly Linux OS - on my Dell Laptop earlier on. It looks good, it runs fast, but there is a problem. I can't get my Wi-Fi card working. Not because it's incompatible, but because nowhere does it tell you, in English, how to get the damn thing installed. Everyone who writes about it talks endlessly about kernels and what not when the average user is not going to have a clue about them. This is the problem, it's fine if you're in the know, but if not you stand little chance of getting your system working because of things like this. I'm fairly techy and it's still all greek to me, so it looks like my old laptop is now an ornament that will never connect to the internet, solely because linux people are incapable of writing, in English, how to do so. Open Source software is brilliant. But it will never replace commercial software until it becomes user friendly. |

Better or Worse?
I heard a bit of a speech today that referred to how much better the country is since 1997. It interests me because I hear it a lot, how much better the country is since the Labour party came to power, it's very partisan and I'm not convinced of it's accuracy. I can't be alone in thinking that in many things the country is getting worse? Yes, somethings have improved, but to what extent is that the result of social and technological progress that would have occurred regardless of who was in office? Many things, I think, have gotten worse, to what extent is that the government and how much is it an inevitable decline in society? So my question today is; Is the country better, worse or much the same as it was in 1997? To what extent is this caused by government? |

Be gone already...
![]() Go. Be Gone. Get the message. I'd forgotten why I don't watch question time - it's because you have to listen to hypocrites like Harriet Harman defending the indefensible, lying outright, etc. Thank goodness for Ian Hislop ripping into her. She's just finish talking about how Labour chose Gordon Brown - I missed the bit where there was any choice given - then she talked about how it's not true how unpopular he is, then she talked about how good on the economy he is. Then she refused to rule herself out for running for leader. The country didn't vote for him. His own party didn't vote for him. It's perfectly clear that no one likes him. He can't choose the best ministers for his cabinet because the most experienced ones won't serve under him, he can't trust his foriegn secretary, has to watch his back all the time. The only reason he still has a job is that he is in a party who's MP's are in the main too coward to give him the push. He was a rubbish Chancellor and he is a rubbish Prime Minister and what's worse is we didn't even elect him.

Am I the only one?
Hoping the Large Hadron Collider fails to find the Higgs-Boson? Admit it, it would be amusing, right? "Oh, crap, we've been wrong about all kinds of stuff and wasted our lives chasing a phantom particle. Oh, and we kinda' wasted billions doing it." |

King Kev?
It's odd being a Sunderland fan these past few days. On the one hand Newcastle is a club in turmoil, something that always make a Sunderland fan smile, it could well affect their season badly and local rivals are always looking for one up on each other. On the other hand, I quite like Kevin Keegan, I think he's been treated horribly by the board. Mike Ashley is an idiot. The part of me that loves the game thinks this can only be negative, Keegan is a rare thing in football these days - someone with integrity. He loves the club and was doing his best for it, he was undermined from day one by the chairman and his position was made untenable. It's all of the things I dislike about modern football, it's business first, all about the money, no loyalty, no passion. In that sense I feel sorry for Newcastle fans who've been well and truly betrayed by the board - who should really be offering refunds on season tickets as Keegan was a huge pull for the fans. I guess for once I feel solidarity with Newcastle fans because football as a whole is what suffers. That said I still hope it unsettles the team and they finish lower than us! |

Neighbourhood Watch...
There are times in life when you find yourself less than thrilled with the actions of your neighbours, perhaps they play their music too loudly, perhaps they have an aggressive dog, you have no option but to complain and you hope that the situation goes away. I have a huge problem with the dorky guy round the corner from me and, even if I do say so myself, it kind of dwarves your feeble problems with people playing Rihanna too loud or letting Rover pee on your lawn. Yes, my neighbour seems hell-bent on a confrontation with Russia. Seriously, couldn't he at least have moved out of nuclear blast radius from my house before he started telling Medvedev and Putin that we could take them? I'm wondering if the best option is just to go knock on him and see if we can't iron this out? Perhaps he'd listen to reason? I mean, I have to be honest, I've never been so hot on my "local" MP being foriegn secretary anyway. It's all well and good him getting a cabinet salary and flights to exotic locations but who exactly is looking after the constituency while he is at the UN chatting up Angelina Jolie or in Kiev giving Russia the bird? Anyway, that is beside the point. The fact is that he seems to have decided today that it would be good to personally lead the west in a coalition against Russia because, well, you know, they like speak a different language and have different views to us. If I were to knock on him I'd probably point out that while he says that Russia is unacceptable for recognising South Ossetian independence, Russia feel the same way about us recognising Kosovan independance; I assume he wouldn't go into his green house and throw stones, so he probably shouldn't keep stressing this whole recognising peoples independence angle. He also seems quite fond of mentioning how they refuse to deport Lugovoi to face trial in London, although mentions somewhat less of the fact that we refuse to deport people to Russia. Better watch that greenhouse again, eh, old stick? And I'd best not even start on the missile shield, I mean, I'm sure the Americans would be thrilled if Russia put it's own missile system in Cuba. Oh. Yes, I see. So, next time you see that nerdy chap that calls himself foreign secretary on the television, spare a thought for me and what is surely the ultimate bad neighbour problem; And remember, if your neighbour keeps on making a noise, not a lot will happen, but if mine won't shut up we could end up back in 1962. |
