Better or Worse?

I heard a bit of a speech today that referred to how much better the country is since 1997.  It interests me because I hear it a lot, how much better the country is since the Labour party came to power, it's very partisan and I'm not convinced of it's accuracy. I can't be alone in thinking that in many things the country is getting worse?

Yes, somethings have improved, but to what extent is that the result of social and technological progress that would have occurred regardless of who was in office?  Many things, I think, have gotten worse, to what extent is that the government and how much is it an inevitable decline in society?

So my question today is; Is the country better, worse or much the same as it was in 1997? To what extent is this caused by government?

actually since '97 things have got better if you are poor (but not if you have a crap heating system or are a pensioner). we do at least have a minimum wage, every child matters, working family tax credit, slightly better funding options for students, that EMA thing for 16 - 18 year olds..................

I agree that the Minimum wage is a very good step forward, much needed. (And stupidly opposed by the Conservatives)

I'm not convinced by any other economic measures though, it seems the government have a whole lot more money per annum; students now pay to be educated, tax has increased and so has national debt. Yet where are all the benefits of this?

The benefits are everywhere you look, take the NHS for example. I recall David Cameron saying that was going to be his primary focus, can't remember him mentioning it in over a year now.

I don't think that the NHS is so much improved - so many super bugs around, drugs available in areas dictated by post code, highly difficult to get an NHS dentist, A&E units merged, etc.
