Suite Francaise...

On a trip into town this morning I acquired a copy of Irene Nemirovsky's Suite Francaise.  I've been looking forward to reading this book for sometime now, since first hearing about it's initial publication in France two years ago.  The novels (the book contains the first two of five planned novels) was written by Nemirovsky while living in occupied France and banned from publishing writing by the Nazi's.  She wrote the the two novels in small hand writing in a single notebook which remained in her belongings with her daughters.  Nemirovsky was interned by the Nazi's and sent to Auchwitz, where she died in 1942.  Believing the notebook would contain writing too painful to read about their mother, the daughters never opened it until 1998 when they were sorting their mothers papers and opened it for the first time to discover the lost novels.

The critics have went entirely cuckoo for the book, with it already being referred to as a lost classic and one of the outstanding works of French literature.  While it is understandable that any find of this nature would receive massive publicity everything I have read about the book points to it being a great read, so I decided to pick up a copy of the paperback on its release this morning.  I do have a mounting pile of books to get through, one that has far outgrown my bookshelf, but plan to make this my next read upon finishing Wodehouse's Thank You, Jeeves, which I am presently enjoying.

I shall of course, keep the one and a half of you that still read my wittering informed on if it turns out to be as amazing a read as the critics are saying.  However, even if not a wonder work of literature the history and circumstances in which it was written will surely make it a very interesting read.  If you're interested it's worth buying at Waterstone's this week where it is offer of the week and half price.

Cigs! Woo! I'm glad to hear from someone trustworthy who has read it. I am going to try to knock off the rest of Jeeves tonight, 150 pages of Wodehouse can't take too long, can it?

Am I the half?
What did you say you were knocking off tonight....
*goes back up to re-read*
oh right then. Comfy sofa, hot coffee and some nice relaxing music in the background should aid your quest to finish.

I was a feather's weight away from purchasing the other day, and that was when I knew nothing about it. Dang.
Will amend, shortly.

Feathers! Not only are you charming, amusing and sometimes endearingly rude But clearly you're also a very svelte young lady. Lucky Durham I say! I nearly blogged about Durham today, but decided to do so tomorrow instead.

Mike, this is good though, now you can get it for a bargainous price too!

Ah, Wodehouse, I miss that chap...

Suite Francaise sounds bewitching, but unfortunately I am very behind on the reading of my own library...oops.

Moobs, I shall endeavour to be prompt!

Arty, yes, I am loving Wodehouse, it's all so trivial in a way, yet perfect light hearted, amusing, well written reading. I love it. I have the Everyman classic version of this one and it's a lovely book, I hope to collect them all in those covers.

9 stone? That's one of my legs, that is. Svelte indeed.

....
The problem with buying this book is that unfortunately at last count I had 3.98 x 10 to the power of 87 books to read first, and another 2 coming from Amazon thanks to Friday's Grand Moment Of Weakness during lunchtime at work.
So I'll have to rely on my children's children's children to read it for me.

Mike, I'm sure your children's children's children will be happy to be of service to their Great Gramps. It seems this over flow of books is not a rare thing, we most all be entirely unable to resist literary temptation anymore, especially with amazon being so easy and remembering your card details.

This sounds good. Let me know what it's like without telling me the plot! Been looking around for something new to read!

Not far into it yet, but it's great thus far, I don't want to put it down.

Just bought it!

Huw! Well done! I am still really enjoying it.
