Reasons not to write down a friends credit card number #196

...You will lose it.

You won't be able to ask them for it again as then they will know you have lost it.

Good job I didn't write "VISA" in big letters followed by the number, valid date, expiry date and even the security code then.

Oh.

Whoops, I did.

Seedy Scrabble...

So, I was on Scrabulous on facebook, and thought I'd click 'join table' to see if anyone wanted a slow random game, only to find out that it's being used by desperate men to try to get somewhere with the fairer sex.  The things for joining a game are like...

"XXXXX is requesting a Regular game using the English TWL dictionary.

Speed: Moderate

Rating: 1365

Note: only naughty girls who wanna chat and wanna have some fun!!!!! no restricted topics anything and every thing"

Now, I'm not naive, but when did Scrabble become a way to try to get girls to talk dirty to you?  Have I missed some major change in the way the game is played?  The other ads are requesting "scrabble with adult chat" "strip scrabble" and more.  In fact the only none "adult" game requested at the moment allows only people who are better at English than Shakespeare and can finish within the hour...

Will Smith Does That!!

Why is Jonathan Ross poking fun at Will Smith for lining up his notes in order of value and making sure the heads are all aligned?  Geeze, I've done that for years - ever since I worked in a paper shop and was told to do that before putting anything in the safe, now I just like my money neat.

Luckily, lately I've never had more than one note at a time!

High Time Too...

Opera takes Microsoft to book...

I'm glad that someone is finally pushing back at Microsoft over this.  Their refusal to abide by international standards is probably the most annoying thing for web developers.  How do you explain to a client that what you have done is in fact perfectly correct, and the problem is in the software?  Clients often don't even know there is more than one browser, and even if they do, find it hard to believe that the fault is with the mega corporation.  It's absurd that we have a situation where doing something right means it will not work, yet that's exactly the situation you've had for years with Microsoft, who think they can make their own rules, even if they are against international standards.

I hope Opera have good luck with this!

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.  There is no need to censor it, it's a classic song that's been around years.

(Goodness knows what Google will index me as after this.)

Happy New Year

Happy new year everyone.  I'm sticking to tradition and doing an entirely pointless meme in which I will say nothing in particular of any interest and dodge or delete any questions I don't want to answer.  I'm not tagging anyone, but feel free to pinch it if you're bored!

Hope everyone had a brilliant Christmas and has an awesome 2008!

1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Oh, 2007 has actually been quite the year of firsts. I've paintballed, done archery, went to see an Orchestra live.

2. What dates from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
None.  Why would they? I'm lucky if I can remember the month something happened in, never mind the day!

3. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Further developing my perfect beans and cheese on toast technique.  What started as a moment of inspiration in a cafe by a mountain has became an art form, if I may say so myself.

4. What was your biggest failure?
Failing to come up with sufficiently witty answers on this meme, I'd assume.

5. What was the best thing you bought?

I bought myself a new iPod, which I thought was very grown up of me, instead of stomping around and being mopey about the fact that the last one had given up the ghost.

6. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The Person who made Paddington Bear eat Marmite instead of Marmalade. I mean, really, what were they thinking of? Humanity has produced some rogues over the years, but this one may very well take the biscuit!

7. Where did most of your money go?
Money? What is this substance? I'd like to know more about it...

8. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Chocolate Cake.  Something's in life are just that good.

9. What song will always remind you of 2007?

Alma's Theme from Mahler's 6th, if that counts.  As heard at the side door of the Sage listening in on LSO rehearsals!  It really is a powerful piece of music.
Umbrella-ella-ella-ey-ey-ey - not by choice, it just gets stuck in my head.  Forgive me, music, for I have sinned.

10. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Wrestling Crocodiles.  Flying to Exotic Locations.  Eating cake.

11. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Having my food checked for traces of pollonium before I ate it; I mean, it felt like a good precaution at the time, but perhaps it was a step too far.  Firing off jokey e-mails to the Russian Embassy just because you're bored doesn't warrant poisoning, it would seem.

12. Did you fall in love in 2007?
Oh, didn't we all? I mean, the sight of a tasty piece of cake staring at me, pleading at to be drenched in cream and then eaten.  How could I resist?

13. How many one-night stands?
Ok, I did have a one night stand with my sleeping bag and duvet.  Kind of a bizzare menage-a-trois to keep warm.  It was lovely to go to sleep in but unfortunatley I woke up around six am hotter than Alec Guiness in the wee metal shed on Bridge over the River Kwai.  It was never destined to last, but I guess you just have to move on sometimes.

14. What was your favorite TV program?

Oh, you must promise not to tell anyone the only tv program I watch particularly regularly.  That would be egg heads.  I am that geeky.  And yes, I shout the answers "You morons, it's 1746, don't you know anything!" etc...

16. What was the best book you read?

I have read many good ones, I'm going to plump for Suite Francaise as the best piece of literature, although it must be said P.G Wodehouse has brought me so much enjoyment and my Jeeves books will be treasured and reread frequently.

17. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Dsus4 with a capo on the third fret.  Like, Woah.  Just a shame I don't like playing with a capo.

18. What did you want and get?

Good Cake.

19. What did you want and not get?

Scarlett Johansson in a bow, but there is still until midnight.

20. What kept you sane?
Who said anything about being sane?

21. What political issue stirred you the most?

The fact that politicians still exist.  Will they ever get the hint that we don't like them so much?

22. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:

That no matter how carefully you pour, cream will dribble down the outside of the wee pouring jug.  sad but true.  Also that you can enjoy sitting up listening to the Cricket all night even when it ends in desolation for England.  Go figure.
